About us

The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is dedicated to finding cures for cardiovascular disease and is one of the most respected heart research facilities in the world. The Victor Chang Innovation Centre, is comprised of seven cutting-edge facilities aimed at advancing cardiovascular research. The new technology platforms housed in the innovation centre are allowing us to understand how the heart works at a much deeper level and will facilitate the development of better treatments for cardiovascular disease. We are currently seeking an exceptional person to join the team as Head, Micro Imaging Facility in the Innovation Centre.

The role

As the Head, Micro Imaging Facility you will report to the Senior Manager, Innovation Centre, and work closely with the Director and Deputy Director of the Innovation Centre, all Innovation Centre staff, Faculty and Operations team.

You will manage and operate the instruments within the Facility, enabling researchers to undertake advanced imaging studies. You will drive the development and promotion of the Facility in the Innovation Centre, building capability, reputation, usage and revenue. Further, you will assist in developing a growth strategy for the Innovation Centre and the Institute in micro imaging, and the implementation of this strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain all instruments and workstations within the Facility to the highest standards, including PerkinElmer Opera Phenix, Zeiss Lightsheet Z.1, Nikon Eclipse Ti2E widefield microscope, Optics11 Chiaro Nanoindenter, Optical Projection Tomography and Bruker SkyScan 1272 Micro-CT scanner
  • Support users of the Facility by setting up imaging protocols, performing and supporting imaging projects and supervising researchers.
  • Develop and implement imaging applications and support users with image post-processing and quantification of imaging data.
  • Induct, train and supervise staff and research students who will work in the Facility, including the delivery of seminars, workshops and training programs about Facility instruments for the benefit of current and prospective users.
  • Lead the general management and operation of the Facility, including reporting and invoicing.

About you

You will have a strong background in microscopy and imaging or other relevant disciplines, and an ability to use this expertise to develop new applications of our suite of cutting-edge technology to extend the capabilities of the Micro Imaging Research Facility. 

Please apply if you satisfy the following criteria:  

  • PhD and/or experience in a biological science (i.e. molecular-cell biology or embryology) discipline involving fluorescent microscopy.
  • Advanced experience and expertise using fluorescent light microscopy and CT of biological materials, including high-throughput and high-content systems.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with, train and support others in the use of micro imaging instruments in a multi-disciplinary research environment, with a strong customer service ethic and approach.
  • Detailed knowledge of the design and implementation of experiments and associated data processing and analysis, and ability to use image processing software and to manage large data sets.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in operation of imaging systems, including the design, development and implementation of new methods.
  • Detailed knowledge of all/most of the following specific systems:
    • PerkinElmer Opera Phenix
    • Zeiss Lightsheet Z.1
    • Nikon Eclipse Ti2E widefield
    • Optics11 Chiaro Nanoindenter
    • Optical Projection Tomography
    • Confocal and spinning disc microscopy systems
    • Bruker SkyScan 1272 Micro-CT Scanner

Highly desirable:

  • A track record of successfully securing external funding for equipment and/or infrastructure. 
  • A high level of operational proficiency and business acumen, including a track record of business development and strategy development within a research Facility.

What we offer:

  • Base salary of $90,000 - $105,000, commensurate with skills and experience.
