The us

The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is dedicated to finding cures for cardiovascular disease and is one of the most respected heart research facilities in the world. The Victor Chang Innovation Centre, is comprised of seven cutting-edge facilities aimed at advancing cardiovascular research. The new technology platforms housed in the innovation centre are allowing us to understand how the heart works at a much deeper level and will facilitate the development of better treatments for cardiovascular disease. However, in the process we are generating exceptionally large and complex datasets using these high-throughput systems that require specialist scientific computing expertise to develop custom data analysis and visualisation solutions.


The role

The successful candidate will provide specialist technical/computing support to enhance experimental methods, develop software to facilitate acquisition and analysis of data, and support use of high-performance computing to maximise the impact and utility of the latest high throughput technologies. They will also reduce scientific ‘hands on time’ on process orientated activities that can be resolved by specialised computational know-how. This is a core services role required to assist staff in navigating the complex computational tools available to analyse the vast amounts of data research is now generating.

Responsibilities

  • Help scientific staff identify areas where computational approaches may increase efficiency of complex tasks
  • Support high-performance computing by developing relationships with key HPC service providers, training key scientists and improving HPC use within the Institute
  • Perform feasibility tests on novel ideas and concepts that facilitate improved data analysis
  • Identify, develop and facilitate the utilisation of the Victor Chang Innovation Centre by external stakeholders by addressing scientific computing needs
  • Follow industry best practice in unit-tests, test-driven development, clear documentation and continuous integration and delivery
  • Contribute to software licencing endeavours and/or publication of novel software solutions as appropriate
  • Experience with software development; coding using platforms such as C++, Python, Matlab, R;
  • Experience with imaging and signal processing
  • Expert knowledge of high-performance computing
  • Ability to analyse and solve complex problems
  • Ability to manage time effectively and to meet deadlines
