The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is dedicated to finding cures for cardiovascular disease and is one of the most respected heart research facilities in the world.

In 2016, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute established the Innovation Centre, comprised of seven cutting-edge facilities, with a focus on Stem Cells and Gene Editing, Cell Function & Screening, Metabolomics, Cryo-Electron Microscopy,  Micro Imaging, Preclinical and Clinical Imaging.

This new centre will attract world-class researchers and drive transformative research. It will allow scientists to access cutting-edge technologies and will foster their collaborations with clinical researchers and technological experts, all with a shared vision: to reduce the incidence, severity and impact of cardiovascular disease.

The role

The Head, Preclinical Imaging Facility is an important role within the Innovation Centre at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and will be instrumental in expanding our translational research capabilities.

We are seeking an experienced Facility Head with a strong background in preclinical imaging, particular MR and PET imaging.

In this role you will manage a small team and provide a high level of expertise and hands-on support in MRI and PET, optical imaging, ultrasound, CT and other imaging techniques to researchers using these instruments.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Manage a team of technical scientists, overseeing their training and development
  • Drive the promotion of the Facility, and the development of collaborative research projects involving preclinical imaging, and actively participate in these projects
  • Induct, train and supervise staff and research students who will work in the Facility
  • Support users of the Facility with imaging experiments by setting up imaging protocols, performing and supporting preclinical scanning and supervising researchers
  • Develop and implement scanning applications for original research, as a member of an interdisciplinary team and support users with image post-processing and quantification for multi-modal imaging data as required
  • Drive the development of new capabilities in the Facility by implementation of additional methods and sequences
  • Install, test and implement new imaging hardware; support and maintain local IT infrastructure for the Facility
  • Manage all aspects related to radiation safety in the Facility including ordering of radiochemicals, ensuring their safe use, monitoring as required and disposal in accordance with approved protocols
  • Contribute to the general management and operation of the Facility, including reporting and invoicing
  • Contribute to the development of strategic plans to expand the Institute’s translational imaging capability

About you

We would like to meet you if you meet the following selection criteria: 

  • PhD and/or experience in a discipline involving MR, PET, CT and ultrasound imaging
  • Extensive hands-on experience in operation of preclinical imaging systems, including the design, development and implementation of new methods and sequences
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead a team of research scientists within a research Facility
  • Detailed knowledge of the operational principles of MR, PET, CT and ultrasound imaging with experience in design and implementation of experiments and associated data processing and analysis
  • Hands-on experience in the use of radiochemicals, including legislative requirements and a willingness to take on the role of Radiation Safety Officer for the Institute
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with, train and support others in the use of preclinical imaging experiments in a multi-disciplinary research environment
  • Experience with data processing methods and ability to learn new image processing software and to manage large data sets
  • Excellent organizing and time management skills
  • A high level of operational proficiency and business acumen, including a track record of business development and strategy development within a research Facility
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Python, matlab, C/C++ programming skills highly advantageous
  • Knowledge of MR Solutions MR and PET systems highly advantageous
  • A track record of successfully securing external funding for equipment and/or infrastructure highly advantageous
