Ref 3272/20 - Research Officer, Migrant Heritage - Mandarin, Institute for Culture and Society

The Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) located on the Parramatta campus of the Western Sydney University, conducts interdisciplinary and collaborative research that addresses the cultural challenges and contradictions of an increasingly globalised, heterogeneous and technologically mediated world. The Institute is committed to forging partnerships for cultural research and development with a broad range of organisations and communities in Western Sydney, as well as nationally and internationally.

ICS is host to a number of significant projects funded by ARC Grants, including the recently awarded ARC Linkage project “Heritage making among recent migrants in Parramatta” in partnership with the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage and led by Associate Professor Denis Byrne. The project aims to elucidate how recent migrants experience and interact with existing heritage places in Parramatta and how they generate heritage places and attachments of their own.

The Migrant Heritage-making in Parramatta project aims to narrow the current gap between the recent migrant population and the official heritage record of such urban areas. Capitalising on heritage making theory, the project will advance knowledge, policy and practice by generating a new approach to the inclusion of migrants in the public field of heritage. It will enable heritage managers to build programs and policies to achieve this inclusion and familiarise recent migrants with the language and mechanism of heritage and assist them in sourcing funds for heritage recording and conservation.

The Research Officer will work with the Chief Investigators of the Migrant Heritage-making in Parramatta project to assist with project management and take responsibility for liaising with research participants from the Chinese migrant community of Parramatta. The Research Officer will have responsibility for the day-to-day administration of the interview, photo survey and workshop programs involving Chinese migrant participants.

To be successful, you will need a PhD in a relevant Humanities and/or Social Science discipline and must have oral fluency in both Mandarin and English.

Remuneration Package: HEW Level 6 $96,761 to $103,754 (comprising Salary $81,764 to $87,673 p.a., plus 17% Superannuation, and Leave Loading).

Please note, the above salary ranges are based on the full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and the salary will be paid on a pro-rata basis applicable to 0.2 FTE (7 hours per week).
