The Opportunity

The Faculty of Art Design and Architecture (MADA) invites applications for the position of Research Fellow with an anticipated start date of January 2019.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the delivery of the CRC for Water Sensitive Cities (CRCWSC): Integrated Research Project (IRP) 3 ‘Guiding integrated urban and water planning’. Approximately 80% of the incumbent’s time will be allocated to IRP3, where the Research Fellow will lead and collaborate with Urban Lab staff on original research to explore water sensitive urban planning and development outcomes at a range of spatial scales. The researcher will investigate opportunities to facilitate and strengthen integration between urban and water planning processes, and identify planning options to improve the implementation and delivery of water sensitive approaches. The remaining time will be dedicated to participation within the Master of Urban Planning and Design.

Research Context

In 2018, MADA introduced a Master of Urban Planning & Design (MUPD). MUPD joins a suite of outstanding academic programs at MADA that strive to be relevant to contemporary global issues and sensitive to regional contexts. MADA encourages connections between art, design, architecture, and urban planning through research and teaching, as well as integrating with other disciplines to solve societal challenges. The MUPD course expands traditional planning education to include integrative design approaches that can develop the important skills required for planners to meet the future city’s cultural, economic and climatic challenges.

The discipline is located in the Department of Architecture, an internationally networked, creative community of practitioners, educators and researchers engaged with the shifting landscapes of the discipline. It also maintains strong connections with other urban thinkers in faculties and research centres across Monash University, including the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities, the Monash Sustainability Institute and the Monash Infrastructure Institute. The course is locally and internationally networked with a broad community of practitioners, educators and researchers, with students drawn from many disciplines and backgrounds.

MUPD staff are highly integrated with the Monash Urban Lab. Lab research combines multi-scalar design investigations with policy studies focussed on transitioning to sustainable and equitable communities. We draw on our strengths within MADA, across campus, and with Australian and international partners to support applied research solutions to community, government, and industry challenges.

To be successful in appointment, you will have:

• a PhD in urban planning, urban design, geography, or a related discipline

• A research track record in environmental planning/policy, management, and/or science particularly with a focus on urban water planning evidenced through relevant research grants and refereed publications, project outcomes and professional esteem

• a demonstrated commitment to research collaboration and engagement oriented toward the good of our communities and environment

• a passion for education and a commitment to teaching excellence.

This role is a full-time position; however, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.
