Monash University seeks to improve the human condition by advancing knowledge and fostering creativity. It does so through research and education and a commitment to social justice, human rights and a sustainable environment.
Monash University is at the forefront of Australian higher education, a member of the elite Group of Eight universities and a fixture in the top 100 of the QS World University Rankings. In this environment, Monash Art Design and Architecture (MADA) is a vibrant centre of creative practice, enriching the human experience through transformational design and visual practice.
Architecture at MADA is an internationally networked, creative community of practitioners, educators and researchers engaged with the shifting landscapes of the discipline, and the changing role of the architect as designer, persuasive collaborator and visionary mediator. In its first nine years, the department has achieved an enviable reputation for the high quality of its professional degree program and a clear path of design-based research. The next stage of development requires a professorial Head of Department who will work with the Dean and faculty executive to position Architecture and MADA as the school for the new urban professional.
The Professor and Head of Department will lead the transition from a highly successful start up to a more mature department:
- strengthening the research culture, with equal emphasis on practice-based research in architecture and contemporary urbanism
- building on the strong disciplinary foundation to extend the professional contexts and capacities of architecture graduates.
Candidates will have a PhD in architecture or a related field or, in exceptional circumstances, demonstration of equivalence through research-based practice, accompanied by a strong vision for architecture education and practice, and a strong track record of academic leadership and research excellence.
The professorial appointment will be continuing and will include the role of Head of Department of Architecture for a period of up to five years with the opportunity for renewal.
A competitive remuneration package which includes employer superannuation of 17%. Relocation travel, removal allowance and salary packaging are available.
Monash offers a range of professional development programs, support for research, study and overseas work, generous parental leave and flexible work arrangements.
