The Opportunity

Do you have advanced technical expertise in molecular biology and biochemistry, along with strong laboratory management skills. Then this could be the role for you!

An exciting opportunity is now available for a Laboratory Manager to join the Burnet’s Retroviral Biology and Antivirals team!

You will be responsible for execution of a study to identify a novel HIV drug class, preclinical/clinical studies to advance a bioactive that enhances the vaginal environment and microbiome to prevent HIV acquisition and other adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes as well as contributing to other projects in the lab.

This position will also work closely with the Burnet’s Commercialisation, Innovation and Industry Partnerships team to ensure specific project milestones, relevant to the commercial progression of the antiviral and bioactive candidates.

Some of your areas of responsibility will include:

  • HIV Drug Discovery
  • Microbiome Research and Development
  • Compiling reports for milestone lead projects in conjunction with relevant project managers and CIIP team members including technical data documentation
  • Training and supervising staff/students to conduct their laboratory work under relevant quality systems
  • Laboratory management including overseeing day to day running of the laboratory, developing SOPs and risk assessments, ensuring the laboratory protocols are followed, sourcing and order lab reagents, chemicals and equipment, sample tracking and storage, maintaining inventory and more!

Let’s talk about you

The following criteria are essential requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) (or equivalent) in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Virology, Microbiology, Immunology, or related discipline
  • Experience in molecular biology and biochemistry Essential
  • Experience in laboratory management Essential
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office software and data analysis software

The following experience is preferable:

  • Minimum of 8 years laboratory experience in a related field
  • Ph.D. in microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, virology, related field
  • Experience in GLP and or other quality management principles such as GMP or ISO 9001, writing SOPs and use of electronic notebooks
  • Experience in meeting defined milestones and deadlines
  • Experience in supervising lab staff and students
  • Analytical thinking/problem solving ability
  • Familiarity with product development either in drug or medical devices
  • Knowledge of commercial product development processes and Industry expertise
