THE OPPORTUNITY

An exciting opportunity to join a vibrant and cross-disciplinary team delivering cutting edge research and program implementations in HIV and other BBV and STI prevention. The Postdoctoral Fellow will help lead the planning, implementation and management of key research projects within the HIV Prevention Program, including those related to implementation science and the trialling of new and emerging HIV prevention strategies.

You will help lead existing and currently funded research projects and work within a collaborative and cross-institute team to support and lead future competitive grant and other funding opportunities in HIV prevention science. Specific research projects include:

  • Pilot studies and program implementation for HIV self-testing
  • ACCESS BBV and STI Surveillance System
  • Supporting People to Age Well with HIV
  • Pilot and Phase 1 trial of a new condom technology

The Postdoctoral Fellow will sit within the Public Health Discipline and will be expected to also pursue interdisciplinary opportunities into the International Development and Life Science Disciplines at the Burnet Institute. The position will also support the mentorship and supervision of early career researchers and graduate research students in the Public Health Discipline.

This position is initially funded for a 2 year period with the intention of extending this role through future funding applications and allocations as part of the longer-term strategic development of the HIV Prevention Program at Burnet.

CRITERIA

The successful applicant will have the following:

Essential:

  • PhD in epidemiology, clinical trials methods, or related fields and developing track record relative to opportunity in a relevant field
  • Experience in relevant research and related methodologies
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional work experience in clinical research, epidemiological field studies, or public health research
  • Demonstrated experience in a research / program management role
  • Demonstrated capacity to conduct independent research with high quality research outputs including publication and translation into policy or practice.
  • A strong background in leading and guiding statistical analyses, including experience in the use of statistical software such as Stata, SAS and R.
  • Previous experience with undertaking research in development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based materials and activities
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including and the ability to engage professionally with stakeholders and display empathy and understanding in dealing with marginalised people
  • Previous experience leading the development and writing of academic publications
  • Demonstrated understanding of ethical principles underpinning research with marginalised populations
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, including being able to manage multiple research-related tasks

Preferable:

  • Experience in the supervision of students undertaking undergraduate and higher degrees
  • Experience working in community based settings and with vulnerable and marginalised populations
  • Experience in the dissemination of research findings
  • Excellent working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite and other database packages
