RESEARCH FELLOW IN NANOPHOTONICS

School of Physics
Faculty of Science
The University of Melbourne, Australia

Salary: AUD$66,809* - AUD$90,657 p.a. (*PhD Entry Level AUD$84,458 p.a.) plus 9.5% superannuation

Based at the University of Melbourne Parkville campus, you will work within the Optical Physics Group in the School of Physics investigating metasurfaces for optical information processing.

Working under the supervision of Professor Ann Roberts, you will collaborate with Honorary Professorial Fellow, Tim Davis, and CSIRO collaborator, Dr Daniel Gomez, in this position funded by an Australian Research Council – Discovery Projects grant 'Insight from Darkness: Nanophotonics for real-time phase imaging'. This project aims to develop ultrathin surfaces patterned on the nanoscale for extracting information from optical wavefields. This capability will open up the possibility of imaging transparent objects with minimal computational post-processing and will also underpin fundamental advances in understanding the interaction of light with nanostructures.

Your position will involve a combination of electromagnetic modelling, device fabrication and optical characterisation.

As the successful candidate, you will have:

  • a PhD or equivalent in Physics, Physical Chemistry, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • an excellent record of research productivity and publication relative to opportunity
  • the ability to undertake independent research with minimum supervision
  • excellent communication skills with the capacity to communicate scientific research
  • the ability to interact positively and productively with staff, students and external stakeholders
  • good record-keeping, data management, and reporting skills
