CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

The Australian e-health research centre (AEHRC) is CSIRO’s digital health research unit delivering innovation to the health system. It is the largest eHealth research group in Australia with more than 100 research scientists working with clinicians and industry to identify the clinical and/or health challenges.

Within the AEHRC, the charter of the Transformational Bioinformatics Group is to develop novel bioinformatics solutions for research and industry using the latest in cloud and BigData infrastructure. The successful candidate will join AEHRC and collaborate across CSIRO to develop novel bioinformatics and statistical approaches for biosecurity applications, in human-, animal- or plant-health.

Your duties will include:

  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Developing innovative concepts, theories, tools and techniques related to pathogen genomics and evolution and their link to disease progression.
  • Producing high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals, client reports, blog posts, and granting of patents
  • Recognising and utilising opportunities for innovation and the generation of new theoretical perspectives, and progress opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research

Location: Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra or Melbourne
Salary: AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as bioinformatics, data science, or similar.  Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Experience/familiarity with the principles of machine learning.
  • Practical experience with genome analytics of WGS and other ‘omics data types.
  • Evidence of advanced data analytics and programming capabilities in more than one language relevant for bioinformatics (e.g. Python, Java, C++, Scala, BASH, R, Julia).

Eligibility

To be eligible to work in CSIRO you must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or either hold, or be able to obtain, a valid working visa.

Appointment to this role is subject to provision of a national police check and may be subject to other security/medical/character requirements.
