We are offering an exciting dev-ops role working at CSIRO in biodiversity science, using modern open-source and cloud technology and collaborating with stakeholders all around the country and the world.

The Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) is Australia’s national biodiversity data aggregator funded under the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) and hosted by CSIRO. The ALA is the Australian node of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). Our digital infrastructure is developed in-house to support research activities, government decision-making and community events.

Your duties will include:

  • Maintain and improve deployment configuration files for use in Ansible deployments
  • Manage the DevOps issues and track progress via the team’s Kanban board 
  • Apply security patches to servers 
  • Monitor server logs and statistics
  • Manage backups and periodically test restore scripts
  • Review code changes by other members of the team
  • Assist with the transition to container-based deployments using Kubernetes

Location: Canberra, Melbourne or Sydney
Salary: AU $102,724 to AU $111,165 plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term of 2 years

To be considered you will need:

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience managing Linux-based servers in a production environment 
  • Experience deploying and managing software in a cloud environment, such as AWS, GCP, Azure or OpenStack
  • Scripting language experience – one or more of Shell/BASH, Python, JavaScript, Ruby
  • Working knowledge of databases and SQL
  • Experience with git version control system (or equivalent)
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters to achieve desired results.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience with configuration management or infrastructure as code tools, such as Ansible, Terraform, CloudFormation, Puppet or Chef
  • Experience with agile methodologies
  • Experience or knowledge of cyber security concepts and best practices
