As an Indigenous Research Projects Officer, you will be a part of the Collaborative and Indigenous Science team within CSIRO’s Land and Water (L&W) and provide science support to a wide range of Indigenous projects and beyond. In respectful partnership with Indigenous Australia, you’ll participate and co-produce methods in partnership projects addressing the national challenges of climate disaster and resilience, strengthening regional prosperity, and contributing to the Closing the Gap strategies through sustainable Indigenous enterprises and resilient economies.

This role is only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. This is a great opportunity to be at the forefront of impactful research into strengthening Indigenous communities. We would not be able to achieve our goals without the critical perspectives of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

You’ll actively participate in a broad range of research projects in areas such as land, sea, water, or natural resource management, climate change and adaptation, disaster resilience, Indigenous economies, or environmental governance.

Your duties will include:

• Participating in the ongoing development of L&W and CSIRO’s Indigenous Science agendas and initiatives.
• Coordinating and supporting research on multiple high-impact projects.
• Work collaboratively in multi-sited and interdisciplinary teams across CSIRO and its partners.
• Undertake community-based and participatory fieldwork in multiple locations in rural and remote Australia, particularly focused on Northern Australia.
• Planning and delivering workshops and other research events to deliver collaborative and Indigenous science.
• Conducting local engagement activities and developing video materials and presentations to achieve project milestones.
• Undertaking desktop work (literature reviews, data processing and entry, administrative tasks) to support science and impact goals.
• Follow existing and/or design new processes for adhering to Indigenous cultural protocols and other CSIRO protocols and ethical standards in research events

Location: Townsville (preferred); Darwin, Brisbane, Canberra and Perth (can be considered)
Salary: Market salary plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

• A relevant degree in Science or Indigenous related discipline or an equivalent combination of qualifications, research, or work experience preferably in areas such as land, sea, water or natural resource management, climate change and adaptation, disaster resilience, Indigenous economies, or environmental governance.
• Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies, cultures and the issues affecting these cultures in Australian society as well as a demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
• A current open class driver’s license and the ability to travel to regional and remote areas for fieldwork.
