The Biomedical Manufacturing Research Program works with biomedical companies to deliver new medical treatments and technologies that benefit millions of people in Australia and overseas, helping them live longer, healthier, and more productive lives.

As a Structural Biologist, you will join the Protein Engineering Team and will apply your knowledge and experience in structural biology and associated techniques. You will design and conduct protein x-ray crystallography experiments to solve structures and perform biophysics experiments to explore protein structure-function relationships. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute towards the development of new medical treatments and technologies.

Your duties will include:

  • Under limited direction, assisting in the planning and preparation of research proposals and carry out research investigations, requiring originality, creativity and innovation. 
  • Designing and conducting protein crystallography experiments including x-ray data collection, and protein structure solution, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Applying biophysical research techniques to explore protein structure-function relationships.
  • Collaborating with protein and medicinal chemists in progressing hit compounds from high throughput screening campaigns.
  • Presenting results in a meaningful format, prepare reports for clients and/or write scientific papers for publication.

Salary: AU$102k - AU$111k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in a relevant field such as Structural Biology or Biophysics/Biochemistry. 
  • Demonstrated experience in protein x-ray crystallography and structure determination and analysis with a focus on ligand-bound protein structures.
  • Expertise in biophysical analysis of proteins and experience in the interpretation of a variety of biochemical and biophysical data. 
  • Experience in the management of crystallographic data.
  • Excellent communication skills and a sound history/record of publication in peer reviewed journals and/or authorship of scientific papers, reports, grant applications or inventorship on patents applications.
  • A history of undertaking original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.
  • To be able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary project team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
