CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

This Genetics and Genomics of Tropical Feral Cattle project will build on recent achievements of CSIRO Animal Genomics team. More specifically, within the theme of natural selection and tropical adaptation.

In northern Australia, European cattle, firstly managed in very extensive pastoral properties, have become feral. Now they thrive in one of the harshest ecosystems. These feral cattle offer unique opportunities to study adaptive evolution in real time and to inform ongoing efforts towards adaptive and resilient livestock.

The chief aims of this project are the development and application of breakthrough analytics for the detection of genomics regions linked to tropical adaptation, the identification of candidate causal mutations, their validation and further use in guided selection for improved resilience in cattle.

Your duties will include:

• Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
• Utilising design thinking methodology to plan and prepare research proposals, and apply non-academic impact methodology to research projects
• Proactively undertaking development to grow effective researcher capabilities to support career goals.
• Adhering to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Code of Conduct, Health, Safety and Environment procedures and policy, Diversity initiatives and Making Safety Personal goals.

Salary: AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

• A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as genetics, genomics, animal breeding, or similar

Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.

• Knowledge and skills in quantitative genetics and genomics, with specific application to genetic parameter estimation and genetic/genomic evaluation of livestock species (e.g., GWAS, genomic prediction).
• Evidence of advanced programming skills and software design in languages relevant for bioinformatics in a UNIX environment (e.g., BASH, Fortran, Python, C++, Java, Scala, R or equivalent).
• Demonstrated experience with handling, integrating, and analysing large volumes of data from a variety of sources.
• Some experience with molecular genetics techniques is highly regarded.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this role, you must be an Australian/New Zealand Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or Australian temporary resident currently residing in Australia and be able to commence in the role by 30 June 2022.

The successful applicant will be required to obtain and provide a National Police Check or equivalent. Additional integrity checks may be required for specific roles which require security clearance for working with children, Australian Government cybersecurity requirements or other identified security roles.
