Research conducted within CSIRO Oceans & Atmosphere (O&A) provides for the large-scale multidisciplinary science to inform this use of Australia's marine environment. We develop tools for decision making in coastal-marine regions and provide scientific support to authorities and industries responsible for the sustainable management and use of Australian and international fisheries. 

CSIRO is seeking a motivated Research Scientist – Quantitative Coastal Ecologist to join the Coasts and Ocean Research Program (COR), which provides scientific knowledge and tools to support sustainable development of Australia's coastal and marine resources. 

In this role, you will support the delivery of a diverse array of projects within Australia and internationally. A focus of your work will be current and future development of restoration and nature-based solution (NbS) initiatives, particularly coral reefs, mangroves, benthic habitats, seagrasses, etc. As part of multi and transdisciplinary teams, you will focus on established, emerging, and novel aspects of our coastal-marine science discovery and delivery. You will collaborate across with a range of stakeholders to develop new tools for coastal management and conservation and restoration strategies

If you have experience in Australian coastal and marine sciences supporting sustainable management and numerate/quantitative data analysis, then read on! We are open to considering candidates with a range of different skills including those with a strong computational background relevant to this role to ecologists who have appropriate field experience.

Your duties will include:

• Contributing to the delivery and development of projects aligned with research priorities in restoration and NbS on coral reefs, mangroves, seagrasses, and other coastal marine habitats.
• Contributing to the science and delivery of projects resulting from partnerships and collaborations across Australia and internationally within the COR program.
• Carrying out impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO with the aim of delivering novel and important scientific outcomes and sustainable management of coastal marine ecosystems.
• Promoting new collaborations and fostering existing relationships across CSIRO and with other research partners.
• Undertaking fieldwork including diving and boating as required.

Salary: AU$102k - AU$111k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

• A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) and postdoctoral/industry experience in a relevant field such as Marine Ecology or Environmental Management.
• Research experience in support of, or applied to, the sustainable management of species, habitats and ecosystems.
• Experience in the use of numerical and data analytics approaches to improve coastal-marine processes understanding.
• Good communication skills including a publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and/or reports, grant applications or inventorship on patent applications coupled with the ability to present research outcomes at conferences
• The ability to contribute to business development or project development.
• A history of undertaking original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.
• The ability to work as part of multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research teams, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research. 
• To be willing and able to undertake travel (domestic and international) and fieldwork including diving and boating as required.
