CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

The Postdoctoral Fellow in Aquatic Weeds Management will join the Tropical Weeds team and work in close collaboration with aquatic weed ecology and management team within the Invasive Plant and Animal Science group, Biosecurity Queensland. The role will plan and investigate various aspects of invasive aquatic weeds management.

The project will focus on developing new aquatic herbicidal control techniques where the Postdoctoral Fellow will plan and develop efficient integrated control options for some of Queensland’s worst aquatic weeds.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to design and conduct both field and laboratory experiments which will provide high variety in their role.

Your duties will include:

  • Propagating and culturing aquatic plants for experimental work in aquaria and ponds at the Ecosciences precinct
  • Designing and conducting lab and outdoor experiments and maintain research infrastructure
  • Applying aquatic herbicides; measuring and monitoring the effects of herbicide treatments on aquatic plants
  • Carrying out field work to conduct experiments and collecting data in freshwater systems, often with limited direct supervision. This may include working in the field for extended periods of time either as part of a small team or independently
  • Performing research in and around water bodies, including wading in shallow water, using watercraft and drones for data collection
  • Processing samples in the lab, recording, managing and analysing data including analysing remote sensing data

Salary: AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD). The doctorate must be in a relevant discipline area, such as freshwater ecology, plant science, agricultural science, or environmental science.

Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of relevant research experience.

  • Previous experience with aquatic plant research or work in freshwater environments
  • Previous experience with herbicide research
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.
  • A record of science innovation and creativity, including the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
  • Hold a current driver’s licence
