Research Scientist in Magnetotellurics

  • Contribute to the development of magnetotellurics as a mineral exploration technique
  • Work on real-world ‘exploration through cover’ challenges
  • Help further our understanding of the genesis and formation of mineral systems

Australia's future mineral, energy and water resources will come from greater depths, and our ability to exploit these resources is limited by deep and complex regolith systems.  Magnetotellurics (MT), audio-magnetotellurics (AMT), and controlled-source audio-magnetotellurics (CSAMT) are geophysical techniques well-known to be important for exploration that can lead to the discovery of new mineral deposits and increase our understanding of the genesis and formation of mineral systems.

As a Research Scientist in Magnetotellurics (MT), you will develop methods to quantify uncertainty in MT data.  You will assess interpretation biases due to simplifying assumptions in forward and inverse modelling and support the ongoing development of MT as an exploration technique.  Facilitating the development of advanced interpretation techniques, you will help companies achieve more efficient and higher-accuracy drilling campaigns through deep cover.

You are an outstanding early career research scientist with a background in MT data processing, inversion, and interpretation.  Contributing your significant knowledge in uncertainty quantification and probability theory, you will help drive the development of MT as an exploration technique.

In this role you will:

  • Conduct innovative research aligned with the goals of CSIRO Mineral Resources that lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Engage and collaborate with the magnetotelluric community in Australia and overseas.
  • Assist in the planning and preparation of research proposals and carry out research investigations.
  • Present results in a meaningful format, prepare reports for clients and/or write scientific papers for publication.
  • Undertake or oversee experimental and/or observational research activities, and ensure experiments are established in accordance with research design.
  • Draw on professional expertise, knowledge of other disciplines and research experience, recognise opportunities for innovation and generate new theoretical perspectives

Location: Kensington (Perth) Western Australia
Salary: AU$98k - AU$106k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: 20 month term
Reference: 72248

To be considered you will hold a PhD in a relevant discipline such as geophysics, or have relevant experience coupled with a suitable degree which together are equivalent to a PhD in this area.

You will also have:

  • Experience in uncertainty quantification of magnetotelluric data processing.
  • Experience in probabilistic inversion of magnetotelluric data.
  • Advanced computing skills, with a specific emphasis on high-performance computing, (ideally in a Unix/Linux environment).
  • Experience and skill in scientific programming.
  • Evidence of high quality communication skills achieved through high-level reporting, publications and presentations.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team and the motivation and self-discipline to conduct independent research.
  • record of science innovation and a willingness to incorporate novel approaches into scientific investigation.
