The Opportunity

We are seeking a Field Research Technician – Agriculture to join the Cotton Breeding Group within the CSIRO Agriculture and Food Business Unit. This group develops new cotton varieties for the Australian cotton industry. 

As the successful candidate, you will conduct experiments to collect data on variety performance. You will undertake sowing and harvesting cotton experiments at Myall Vale using a variety of modern farm machinery such GPS guided planters, spraying equipment and harvesters. Critical to your success in this role will be your commitment to health and safety when undertaking these tasks.

You will also be required to work at a number of other regionally located sites across NSW and QLD as well as general field and greenhouse operations, sampling experiments and collecting and processing samples.

Your duties will include:

• Operating relevant modern agricultural machinery (such GPS guided planters, spraying equipment and harvesters) for sowing and harvesting of field experiments at Myall Vale and other remote locations.
• Providing support to all other cotton breeding activities as required including ginning, hand picking, delinting, rogueing, field trial maintenance, seed packaging and greenhouse experiment maintenance. 
• Maintaining a safe working environment at all times in accordance with the Safe Work Instructions (SWI) and risk assessments e.g. Take 5.

Salary: AU$63k - AU$80k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

• A valid Australian Class C driver's licence.
• An HC driver's licence or the ability to obtain one.
• Demonstrated experience operating tractors and other relevant agricultural machinery, particularly within the cotton industry.
• A working knowledge of modern farm equipment such as GPS guided planters, spraying equipment or harvesters.
• The ability to lift, bend, walk and undertake repetitive motions and the ability to undertake manual handling and operate equipment safely in accordance with health and safety procedures.
• The ability and willingness to work in harsh and adverse conditions whilst maintaining health and safety requirements.
• Good oral and written communications skills including the ability to encourage safe work practices within a team environment.
• To be able and willing to travel to field sites across NSW and QLD at short notice, sometimes for up to a week at a time.
