CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will couple novel genomic and transcriptomic tools with experimental approaches to advance the science of soil genomics from describing patterns to restoring ecosystems. They will apply functional trait-based ecological theory to explore interactions among vegetation, mycorrhizas and soils, enabling predictions of when mycorrhizas can benefit ecological restoration. This role will require design and implementation of field surveys of soil genomics/transcriptomics to elucidate relationships between soil conditions, plant host types and the functional composition; design and implementation of glasshouse or field trials using mycorrhizas and plants from native ecosystems, and linking with soil genomic and/or transcriptomic studies.

Your duties will include:
  • Undertaking soil genomic/metagenomic/transcriptomic surveys designed to inform ecological restoration, including managing and analysing associated soil genomic/metagenomic/ transcriptomic data.
  • Culturing and identifying soil mycorrhizas from stock cultures and/or native ecosystems and undertaking and analysing pot or field trials using cultured mycorrhizas and native and exotic plants.
  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Publishing results in high quality journals.

Salary: AU$86k - AU$94k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:
  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as ecological genomics or ecological restoration.
    Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • A current Australian driver’s licence or the ability to obtain one.
  • Experience in growing and culturing mycorrhizas or similar and application to ecological experiments.
  • Strong theoretical understanding of soil ecological genomics. 
  • Capacity to manage and perform bioinformatic analyses of genomic/metagenomic or transcriptomic datasets, including demonstrated experience in commonly used coding languages such as Unix, Python or R.

Eligibility

The successful applicant will be required to obtain and provide a National Police Check or equivalent.

Applicants must be Australian/New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents or Australian temporary residents currently residing in Australia and be able to commence in the role by December 2020/January 2021.
