Experimental Scientist - Marine Ecologist

The Experimental Scientist - Marine Ecologist will join a multidisciplinary team of scientists that studies Western Australian marine ecosystems. They will participate in field and laboratory research and will also enter and analyse data and write reports. The Experimental Scientist - Marine Ecologist will assume responsibility for much of the logistical work associated with preparing for field expeditions, and with storing, archiving and quality control of samples and data. The position involves regular travel for extended periods as part of field surveys.

Your duties will include
  • Working as a member of an integrated team supporting a range of research projects
  • Undertaking logistical work in preparation for and during field trips, including shore- and boat-based trips, and diving
  • Mastering commercial vessels
  • Maintaining field and laboratory equipment in serviceable condition, arranging repairs and maintenance where needed
  • Undertaking complex image analysis tasks including the identification of tropical animals and plants from still photos and videos
  • Carrying out statistical analyses on research data
  • Assisting with the preparation of reports for clients
  • Liaising with CSIRO staff at other sites, as well as collaborators at universities and Government agencies where necessary

Salary: AU$83k - AU$94k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need

- A relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience in Marine Science

- SCUBA diving qualifications (Part 1 Commercial Diver Restricted or equivalent) coupled with significant experience in conducting research and scientific diving from small vessels demonstrated to a high level of competence

- A full Coxswains Certification

- To hold a valid driver's licence

- Demonstrated aptitude for laboratory work including data recording, sorting and identification of biological samples, dissection and microscope use

- Experience in or ability to deliver marine ecological fieldwork including knowledge of research methods used in the study of marine ecology

- Experience in or ability to deliver the manipulation and storage of field and analytical data particularly regarding spreadsheet and database software

- To obtain and maintain a baseline security clearance

- To possess a Scientific Dive Medical Certificate.
