The Microscopy Facility in the Manufacturing Business Unit based in Clayton, requires an assistant cryo-Electron Microscopy (EM) scientist to support the operation including oversight and maintenance of the TEM microscope located in Clayton.

The role is specific to preparation and processing samples for analysis using TEM (especially cryo TEM) and interpretation of images and analytical results for various applications such as slow drug release to cell mutations to material identification/properties.

Your duties will include
  • Sample vetting and problem solving of preparation and presentation needs for complex or bespoke samples, including cryo preparation techniques and ultramicrotomy (cryo and room temperature) of resin embedded samples for subsequent high resolution imaging and analysis.
  • Develop expertise in the instruments and techniques by remaining abreast of advances in the field to advance the facility’s proficiency and advising leadership on emerging instrumentation needs. Explore new capabilities to increase applications and material types analysed.

Salary: AU$83,687 - AU$94,679 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need
  • Tertiary qualification in biology, physics, material science with experience in cryo transmission and scanning electron microscopy in both biological and material (soft and hard) fields and the various relevant preparatory techniques (cryogenic, negative staining and ultramicrotomy).
  • Highly proficient in the operation of cryo TEM and associated preparatory techniques (such as cryogenic preparation, negative staining and ultramicrotomy) with in-depth experience concerning the interrogation of biological and material samples to define structural and chemical/physical properties.
  • Demonstrated knowledge concerning the software required to operate and assess output from imaging and analytical techniques.
  • Effective stakeholder management and delivery of high quality analytical outcomes in an autonomous and timely manner.
  • Preparation of research outcomes for reports, publications and presentations which has resulted in the continuation of research.
  • Develop standard operating policies, procedures and training programs along with supporting technical, operational, training and OHS documentation.
