CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in Direct Air Capture

The Opportunity

  • Do you have an interest in the global challenges of man-made climate change?
  • Use your skills to design & build bench-scale gas/liquid contactor systems
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s premier science & technology research organisation

The Position

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years relevant postdoctoral work experience.  These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

CSIRO’s Energy is seeking to appoint a CERC Postdoctoral Fellow in direct air capture using amine solutions. Direct air capture is increasingly seen as a necessary part of the technology portfolio that will address the global challenge of man-made climate change.

As the successful candidate you will develop and assess innovative gas-liquid contacting concepts that enable efficient capture of CO2 from ambient air. These concepts will be inspired by gas/liquid contactors found in nature such as leaves.

Your duties will include

  • Perform process and equipment based theoretical assessments of a variety of liquids systems and innovative contactor geometries.
  • Design and build bench-scale gas/liquid contactor systems and determine their effectiveness for direct air capture.
  • Consider a range of potential opportunities for further development of the process concept.
  • Carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.

Location:      Newcastle NSW
Salary:          AU$83,687 - AU$94,579 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure:         Specified term of 3 years
Reference:    61635

To be successful you will need

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as chemical engineering, physics or mechanical engineering.

Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.

  • Thorough grasp of fluid dynamics and mass transfer phenomena without and with chemical reaction
  • Excellent understanding of and/or practical experience with liquid absorbent-based CO2-capture processes
  • Excellent laboratory skills including the design and engineering of bench-scale experimental facilities
  • Excellent analytical skills and/or effective problem-solving abilities
