The Junior Physicist – Experimental Scientist role will initially focus on assisting in the development of X-ray technologies, such as X-ray Fluorescence and X-ray Diffraction, for industry. The position offers considerable variety, tackling scientific, engineering and logistical challenges across a range of different research projects and supporting industry trials. There is flexibility within the role for a successful applicant to use or develop their own skills and expertise to contribute to existing projects and to make a contribution to new capability development. Significant work is envisaged planning experiments, operating instrumentation in the laboratory and commission instrumentation in the field (usually mineral processing plants on mine sites).

Your duties will include

  • Setting-up experiments involving X-ray tubes and X-ray detectors, which includes writing scripts to ensure different pieces of equipment work together in an automated way
  • Calibrating and assessing the performance of prototypes: this includes standard sample preparation and analysis of data to obtain calibration curves
  • Assisting in field trials/prototype commissioning at mineral plants (under supervision or independently)
  • Assisting in the electrical and mechanical assembly of prototype industrial measurement analysers
  • Liaising with external companies over the supply of parts or equipment
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues within your team, the business unit and across CSIRO, to reach objectives
  • Developing an understanding of the Sensing and Sorting (SAS) program's technologies and a working knowledge of the hardware components within analyser prototypes in order to perform basic problem identification and solving.

Location: Lucas Heights, NSW

Salary: AU$63K - AU$80K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need

  • Relevant degree in physics or physical sciences
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver assigned research project objectives and report outcomes within a specified timeframe whilst working under the broad direction of a supervisor
  • Experience applying scientific problem solving and research to solve measurement problems
  • Proven background in planning laboratory experiments and using experimental apparatus or instrumentation
  • Experience working effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team to carry out tasks under general direction
  • The ability and willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches in support of scientific investigations
  • The willingness and ability to obtain a Baseline Security clearance
  • To be eligible for this position you must be willing and able to participate in technology field trials in industry in Australia and overseas.
