CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in Advanced Gene Delivery

The Position
CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and, in this case, have less than four years relevant postdoctoral work experience. 

Gene delivery including the delivery of siRNA, miRNA and plasmid DNA is benefitting from the development of novel platform technologies including nanoparticles, nanowire arrays and immunogenes. This research program is investigating porous silicon nanoparticles, silicon nanowire arrays and polymeric immunogenes for the transfer of genes into cells in vitro and in vivo. The research will focus on brain tumours as well as bone/cartilage regeneration.

This postdoctoral fellow will answer several important scientific questions and develop key platform capabilities: how to optimise nanowire arrays for plasmid delivery; how to optimise delivery of siRNA and miRNA using porous silicon nanoparticles; how to prepare immunogenes for delivery of genes encoding for e.g. BMP2.

Your duties will include:

Under the direction of senior research scientists and engineers:

  • Develop gene delivery platforms and test their performance in vitro and in vivo.
  • Undertake regular reviews of relevant literature and patents.
  • Produce high quality scientific and/or engineering reports suitable for publication in quality journals, for client reports and patent applications.
  • Prepare high quality presentations and present these at internal meetings or at conferences as agreed with the supervisor.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues within your team, the business unit and across CSIRO.

Salary:          AU$83k- AU$94k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Materials Science, Biomedical Science, Cell Biology or related disciplines.  Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 4 years (or part time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in cell biology.
  • Demonstrated experience in cell transduction and transfection, and gene silencing.
  • Demonstrated experience in nanomaterials for gene delivery.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
