Research Projects Officer

The Position

Research Projects staff in CSIRO collaborate in scientific and technological activities with other research staff usually by assisting with detailed planning, undertaking or assisting with experimental, observational or technology development work, and in carrying out the more practical aspects of the work.

CSIRO’s Health and Biosecurity is seeking to appoint a Research Project Officer to contribute to a range of projects involving laboratory-based experiments, fieldwork and insectary maintenance. The role is to work collaboratively within the project teams to carry out research for internal and external clients. The appointee must be able to meet AAHL’s microbiological security assessment requirements.

Your duties will include

  • Working in microbiologically secure laboratories (PC2 and PC3), including an insectary, and in the field, as part of a multi-disciplinary research team with responsibilities and outputs supporting and delivering to research projects.
  • Under general supervision follow all reasonable instructions including, the method/approach and the techniques that are to be used, in order to perform routine experimental or operational tasks.
  • Look for opportunities to improve on or develop original experimental methods/equipment/software/concepts/ ideas in support of existing and future research.
  • Communicate openly, effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation. Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Code of Conduct, Health, Safety and Environment plans and policies, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals.
  • Other duties as directed.

Location: Geelong, VIC
Salary: AU$46k - AU$60k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need

  • Demonstrable time management skills.
  • Relevant trade certificate/diploma or relevant work experience in laboratory techniques/technology.
  • Prior laboratory or fieldwork experience preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Individuals with entomological experience (especially with mosquitoes) are particularly encouraged to apply.
