Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biostatistics

We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow to undertake bio statistical research to elucidate knowledge from multifaceted datasets. You will develop solutions for personalised diagnosis and prognosis in aging populations with tangible outcomes and impact.

This is an incredible opportunity for a biostatistician to join our dynamic and effective team. CSIRO Health and Biosecurity provides an outstanding environment with strong capability in employing disruptive technologies for health and medical solutions. The fellow will be in the enviable position of working with internationally renowned experts as part of an interdisciplinary team of academics, clinicians, scientists and students. The fellow will benefit from access to extensive resources and capability as well as a high-performance computing infrastructure (GPU clusters and high-end workstation). The project will have access to existing data from pre-eminent clinical studies from around the world including the Australian Imaging Biomarkers and Lifestyle study of ageing (more than 2000 individuals followed for over 10 years).

Your duties will include

  • Carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Recognise and exploit opportunities for innovation and the generation of new theoretical perspectives, and progress opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research.
  • Utilise design thinking methodology to plan and prepare research proposals, and apply non-academic impact methodology to research projects.
  • Carry out research investigations requiring originality, creativity and innovation.

Location:      Melbourne (Parkville), Victoria
Tenure:         Specified term of 3 years or three years or part time equivalent
Salary:           AU$82K – AU$93K + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as statistics, mathematics, computer science, engineering.
    • Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part time equivalent) of relevant postdoctoral experience.
  • Evidence of a strong statistical background, particularly in areas related to longitudinal data analysis.
  • Evidence of advanced programming skills (e.g. Python, R, Perl, Java).
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate issues of complex and ill-defined problems and develop appropriate responses by adapting/creating and testing alternative solutions.
  • Demonstrable evidence of well-developed written and verbal communication skills, for example, publications in academic environments such as scientific journals/conference proceedings, experience presenting and demonstrating at conferences, industry exhibitions, internal training seminars.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
  • A record of science innovation and creativity, plus the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
