CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in Plant Gene Silencing

The Position:

Postdoctoral Fellows are appointed for up to three years and will work closely with a leading Research Scientist or Engineer in their respective field. They carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO with the possibility of novel and important scientific outcomes. They present the findings in appropriate publications and at conferences.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will join a successful, internationally recognised team of scientists, each with a proven track record of generating and publishing high-profile interdisciplinary research. The interdisciplinary team comprises of expertise in plant genetics, plant gene silencing or RNA interference and insect biology, and perform research that aims to improve crop production and pest management.

The role of the Postdoctoral Fellow will be to design and perform experiments to understand plant host-induced RNAi in insect pests and develop and test novel RNAi strategies for insect pest control.

Your duties will include:

  • Under the direction of senior research scientists, carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Coordinating with team members, organising team member contributions, and keeping team members informed of research progress.
  • Undertaking regular reviews of relevant literature and patents.
  • Producing high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in quality journals, for client reports and granting of patents.

Location: Black Mountain, Canberra
Salary: $82k to $93k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will have:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as plant molecular biology, molecular plant pathology, or RNAi for pest control. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years of relevant postdoctoral experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including at national and international conferences.
  • Demonstrated research experience in developing and performing experiments to answer scientific questions in plant biology and/or pest control.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and use of molecular and bioinformatics methods to study gene expression.
