The Position

CSIRO offers PhD graduates an opportunity to launch their scientific careers through our Postdoctoral Fellowships. These fellowships provide experience that will enhance career prospects and facilitate the development of potential leaders for CSIRO.

Postdoctoral Fellows are appointed for up to three years and will work closely with a leading Research Scientist or Engineer in their respective field. They carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO with the possibility of novel and important scientific outcomes. They present the findings in appropriate publications and at conferences.

Your duties/responsibilities will include:

• Under the direction of senior research scientists, carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
• Conduct laboratory and field experiments for characterising microbe-metal interactions in regolith environments.
• Determine the nature of microbial communities in regolith and deep environments via microbial genetic methods.
• Undertake regular reviews of relevant literature and patents.
• Produce high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in quality journals, for client reports and granting of patents.

Salary:          $80K - $91K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

• A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in Microbiology or a related discipline, with experience and/or an active interest in microbe-metal interactions. Please Note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years of relevant postdoctoral experience.
• Demonstrated experience in molecular ecology of geological samples.
• Basic knowledge in microbial cultivation under aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
• Familiarity with state-of-the-art microscopy techniques (SEM, TEM), inductively coupled plasma  mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and molecular microbial techniques, particularly linked to extracting and amplifying degraded DNA, characterising microbial communities by next generation sequencing of 16S rRNA and 18S RNA genes and internal transcribed spacers (ITS), and analysing sequence data.
• Experience in fieldwork and willingness to organise and undertake occasional field sampling in Australia, in remote locations and under variable climatic conditions.
