Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ecology and Modelling

The Position

CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowships help facilitate the recruitment and development of our potential leaders.  They provide valuable opportunities for scientists and engineers to launch their careers, extend professional networks and enhance their career prospects.

A unique opportunity exists for two Postdoctoral Fellows to join CSIRO Health and Biosecurity.  The successful applicants will work as part of a large-scale collaborative project, developing real-time pest risk forecasting tools that will be integrated in to an Australian agricultural pest surveillance system.

The details of the two fellowships on offer are as follows:

Fellowship 1: Focusses on the generation of models used to forecast pest phenology and population dynamics.

Fellowship 2: Focusses on modelling insect dispersal at regional scales.

Your duties/responsibilities will include:

  • Under the direction of senior research scientists, carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Developing process-based population dynamics models of agricultural pests (arthropods or plant diseases) using a generic modelling framework, OR calibrating insect and pathogen aerial spread and survival models using a high-level modelling package.
  • Undertaking appropriate ecological or eco-physiological experiments to generate data to calibrate the models.
  • Undertaking regular reviews of relevant literature and patents.
  • Producing high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in quality journals, for client reports and granting of patents.

Location:      Canberra, ACT
Salary:          $80K - $91K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Ecology or Ecological modelling/population dynamics
  • Demonstrated experience with ecological modelling.
  • Demonstrated mathematical analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing experiments to calibrate models.
  • A record of science innovation and creativity, plus the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
