The position:

CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowships help facilitate the recruitment and development of our potential leaders.  They provide valuable opportunities for scientists and engineers to launch their careers, extend professional networks and enhance their career prospects.

As a Postdoctoral Fellow with CSIRO Health and Biosecurity, you will undertake research utilising a large database of Whole Genome Bisulphite Sequencing data to identify new DNA methylation based biomarkers for the detection and stratification of metabolic disease. Your research will focus on the development of a novel clinical assay for the early detection of diabetes. Blood based biomarkers (also known as “Liquid Biopsy”) for disease is a rapidly developing field and this project will make use of the latest technological developments in this space (e.g. digital PCR). You will ideally have expertise in epigenomics/genomics and bioinformatics with a strong background in molecular biology. As part of the CSIRO postdoctoral development program, we will provide you with formal support to expand your bioinformatics skillset.

Specifically you will:

• Develop innovative concepts, theories, tools and techniques related to the analysis and integration of epigenomic data.

• Develop DNA methylation assays and test these on clinical plasma samples.

• Participate in collaborative research and liaise with external collaborators.

• Develop innovative decision frameworks with impact in clinical and biotechnological applications.

• Undertake regular reviews of relevant literature and patents.

• Produce high quality scientific and technical outputs suitable for publication in journals and for conference and stakeholder presentations.

You will join the multi-disciplinary, award winning Epigenetics Team with a track record in developing epigenetic biomarkers of disease. The team has a long history in DNA methylation biomarker development which includes the co-development of Colvera(tm) with the Clinical Genomics company. Colvera(tm) is a blood-based diagnostic for monitoring the recurrence of colorectal cancer. The development team was recently awarded the prestigious Eureka Prize for Innovation in Medical Research.

Salary:          AU $83k to AU $91k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

As a minimum requirement, you will hold a doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area such as molecular biology, (epi)genetics or bioinformatics. You will also have:

• High-level communication and team skills, including a record of publications in quality journals and a history of professional behaviours.

• Knowledge and understanding of molecular biology (including lab experience).

• Experience in bioinformatics for the analysis and interpretation of genomics datasets.

• Familiarity with epigenetics principles.

• Proficiency in data analysis using R, Python/Numpy or MATLAB.

• A record of science innovation and creativity
