Production Manager: Books (Part-time)

  • Part-time opportunity – 4 days per week

The position:

As the Production Manager: Books with CSIRO Publishing, you will ensure all titles are produced to our high quality standards.  Leading a small motivated team of professionals, you will be responsible for producing allocated titles (both print and digital) within budget, to schedule and following CSIRO procurement guidelines. Specifically you will:

  • Strive for continuous improvement of existing production systems, and provide transparent administration.
  • Help to lead changes in production processes, workflows, uptake of new technologies and implementation of efficiencies.
  • Work closely with the Editorial Manager in regard to schedules and ensure stakeholders are kept informed of progress and developments in production.
  • Prepare costing estimates and provide regular updates to stakeholders throughout the production process.
  • Advise the Production Manager / Business on new production technologies and developments.
  • Ensure all artwork is in suitable formats for optimum print/web reproduction.
  • Follow print production process from manuscript in, through to warehouse delivery.
  • Follow digital production process including managing the creation of ePubs, full text and chapter by chapter PDFs and maintenance of electronic archives.

CSIRO Publishing is an independent science and technology publisher of books, journals and magazines with a strong emphasis on digital publishing. The business unit is owned by and operates within CSIRO on a commercial basis with its viability dependent on the capacity to generate revenue and sufficient return on investment.

The position is offered on a part-time basis at 0.8 FTE (29.4 hours/4 days per week).

Location:      Clayton (Melbourne) Victoria
Salary:          AU $80k to AU $91k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation
                       (pro-rata for part-time)
Tenure:         Indefinite - Part-time (0.8 FTE)

As a minimum requirement, you will have knowledge of the book production process gained from significant experience (~5 or more years) in a relevant environment, in particular managing frontlist titles in a production team.  You will also have:

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills and a history of professional behaviours.
  • The ability to solve problems and quickly adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Strong team and leadership skills plus the ability to effectively interact with industry colleagues and customers.
  • The ability to allocate activities, direct tasks and effectively manage budgets and resources.
  • Experience using both conventional and digital print production methods.
  • Sound working knowledge of Microsoft products (Adobe suite desirable).
