The Position

The successful applicant will be involved with the curation and management of software, modelling and data systems for the Coastal Environmental Modelling teams. This work is critical for the delivery of modelling and observational products to clients that range from international governments through to a variety of Australian industries.

This role will involve software engineering/development and administration of data systems, web services and web tools across a range of projects. Provide support to research scientists and other senior software and data engineers.

Your duties will include:

  • Assist with the development and curation of the TRIKE platform and its application to near-real time models.
  • Assist with the administration of Linux-based servers, web tools and services that support TRIKE.
  • Assist in the storage and management of environmental model data and help develop innovative solutions for its delivery.
  • Work effectively with distributed teams of scientists and software engineers.

Location:       Hobart, TAS
Salary:           AU $80K to AU $91K plus up to $15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will:

  • Relevant Bachelors/Masters Degree or equivalent experience in software engineering or computer science.
  • Excellent working knowledge and demonstrated skills in two or more of the following programming languages: C/C++, Java, Python, Perl and Unix based shell scripting
  • Knowledge of multidimensional file structures such as netCDF, its associated tools and handling of large data sets
  • Good working knowledge of version control systems, e.g. Git/Mercurial/Subversion
  • Familiarity with the use of relational databases and its administration
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and carry out tasks autonomously in support of scientific research.
  • Demonstrated ability & willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches in support of scientific investigations.
