User Experience Researcher

The Position

Data61 is looking for a User Experience Researcher to work on several client projects including the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Portal.

You will need to be a User Research Specialist, able to lead exploration and investigation activities (e.g. stakeholder workshops, contextual interviews and desk research) and reports for recommendations to the project team for testing and iteration. This could also include producing an appropriate level of conceptual communication (e.g. user journeys, user stories, posters, presentations). We are focused on real outcomes for people using data enabled technology and you will need to have an interest in this area.

In this highly challenging and unique business, you will be part of the User Experience Group, working with world class data and technology researchers, software developers and business teams, but also work closely with the Design Lead and Project Administrator on the project.

The position will be in Data61's Engineering and Design Team with allocation to specific project teams. We have flexible working arrangement because we all have lives outside work and we have a clear, well communicated and supported behaviour code of conduct to ensure respect for all staff at all times.

Salary:          AU $109K - AU $128K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or solid career informed skills development in user experience research
  • Demonstrated user experience research such as interviews, surveys, light ethnographic, test planning/facilitation, reporting
  • Experience in basic solution exploration such as sketches, wireframes, interactive prototyping
  • Proven excellent communication skills both written and oral, including the ability to anticipate the interests and knowledge level of an audience and present information and feedback accordingly.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and carry out tasks autonomously
  • Demonstrated ability & willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches in support of digital product solution investigations.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Understanding of data and metadata standards
  • Interest in international trade and trade data
  • Understanding of modern software architectural principles, including APIs and micro services
  • Experience with designing for information search and discovery systems
  • Experience with data visualisation

Please note: This is a hands-on production role that requires commercial or applied experience and not suitable for anyone looking to start or complete a design degree, PhD, academic or do purely theoretical work.
