The Deputy / Science Director works closely with the Data61 Director and will play a leading role in developing and driving Data61’s scientific vision. You will be an entrepreneurial and collaborative leader who is responsible for establishing and maintaining strong links with industry partners and government, while building and inspiring dynamic and innovative research teams to deliver world-class science.

The role also provides broader leadership and direction to the business unit, with a particular focus on cross-business unit collaborations, staff rewards, student programs, and university engagement.

Your duties will include:

Impact Science Leadership

  • Provide high level strategic science leadership to ensure Data61 remains globally scientifically competitive;
  • Develop and promote a strong scientific culture of excellence focused on national and international impact;

Capability Leadership

  • Strive for “Zero Harm” (physical and psychological) through a commitment to a healthy, safe and environmentally sustainable workplace;
  • Shape science capability internally and externally through partnerships and collaborations to meet future science opportunities, program goals and impact pathway;

Engagement & Partnership

  • Manage strategically important internal relationships with other parts of CSIRO – e.g., strategic cross-business unit initiatives, future science platforms, and engagement with the CSIRO Missions;
  • Provide high-level scientific representation of CSIRO’s capability nationally and internationally;
  • Lead Data61’s Indigenous Engagement strategy and implementation;

Resource Leadership

  • Develop medium and long-term plans for future science infrastructure;
  • Work with the Data61 Leadership Team to ensure that capability, resources, and strategic investments are effectively prioritised and deployed to meet current and future requirements;

Location: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or Canberra, other locations negotiable
Salary:  Attractive salary package is negotiable

Essential

  • An established reputation in applied research science.
  • Evidence of successful leadership of platform, discovery and impact science at the scale of CSIRO’s Data61.
  • Evidence of strong engagement skills and strategic relationship management that grows new science opportunities and supports commercial outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract, retain, empower and develop world class talent and to promote wellbeing and foster cross organisational capability.
  • A track record in supporting a senior leader in optimal positioning, organisational alignment and science delivery in the national interest.
  • Demonstrated track record in planning for science infrastructure to meet short- and long-term needs.
  • Behaviours that are exemplary, and that actively promote cross Business Unit collaboration and corporate initiatives.

Eligibility

You will be required to obtain and provide a National Police Check or equivalent, or to obtain and maintain a National Security Clearance at the baseline level.
