Data61 has a range of exciting opportunities available for Product Managers and User Experience Designers; we are looking for passionate individuals who want to help solve the nation’s greatest challenges with innovative science & technology. To succeed at this, you will be part change maker and part practitioner, encouraging product development approaches within a traditional science organisation, and facilitating the application of product thinking and human centred design across CSIRO.

You will be involved in a range of key strategic programs looking to amplify their impact through product and design thinking and practice - Responsible AI, Digital Agriculture, Reinvent Science, Industry 4.0, Climate Resilience amongst others.

The Product & Design Group sit within the Engineering and Design business unit as part of CSIRO’s Data 61. 

We work in cross-functional teams and collaborate broadly with Science, Engineering, Business Development, and Commercialisation to:  

  • Sense where the market is going to inform research direction 
  • Identify innovations to solve problems of national importance 
  • Reduce the risk of investment in creating & launching products 
  • Increase the probability of return on our science 

We provide rigorous customer-centric techniques and methodologies such as customer discovery, use case development, outcome focused roadmaps, and customer success metrics and validation.

You will be taking innovative digital products and services from concept through to market by applying product development and human centred design practices within an R&D context.

You will have

As a Product Manager: 

  • A university degree plus at least three years’ experience in product management (eight years for senior roles), with a demonstrated track record of taking ideas from concept to market to achieve business outcomes and solve customer problems. 
  • Passion for solving real world problems with science and technology. 
  • A bias towards action / getting things done with high self-motivation and ability to work in a large matrix organisation. 
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences. 
  • Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams to build alignment and achieve outcomes 

As a User Experience Designer: 

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience in a related design discipline with demonstrated career-informed skills development in user experience design. 
  • A minimum of five years relevant professional career experience as a ‘generalist’ user experience practitioner and hands-on experience in a production role (eight years for senior roles). 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead both early and mid-stage user research and take a disciplined approach to the capturing and communication of insights, converting insights into human centred product requirements. 
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate a co-design process and mature outputs into low and high-fidelity solution designs for testing with users, and implementation with development teams. 
  • Demonstrated ability to align solution designs to user types and scenarios by producing an appropriate level of conceptual communication (e.g., user scenarios, user flows, user stories, etc). 
  • Practical experience with Agile and Lean design and development methods including design sprints and rapid prototyping.
