This is a full time, fixed term position of three years duration with the possibility of an extension.

The Australian Academy of Science is seeking a motivated and experienced Media Officer professional.  This is an excellent opportunity to herald the work of Australia’s most outstanding scientists to the media and beyond, this challenging and diverse role will suit an energetic and creative communicator.

This position is based at the Australian Academy of Science-an organisation founded by Royal Charter in 1954 and comprises over 500 of Australia’s leading scientists-and will work within the Academy’s Communications and Outreach team and alongside approximately 70 staff members.

Duties include:

  • Working with the Director, Communications and Outreach
    • Prepare and proactively distribute articles, columns, media releases and promotional information on the Academy’s activities.
    • Maintain and develop the Academy’s Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, podcasting and other social media accounts.
    • Liaise with media and stakeholders to raise awareness of the Academy’s activities and events, including reactive media and occasional out of hours contact.
    • Monitor and report on the Academy’s presence in the media and social media.
    • Write short speeches for officers of the Academy.
  • In collaboration with the Communications and Outreach team, develop multimedia content including but not limited to short videos, audio, graphics and gifs.
  • Working with the web team, develop and maintain the news, media and public events sections of the Academy website by actively seeking, writing and editing articles and photographs.
  • Liaise regularly with staff and Fellows across Academy programs, events and activities to proactively identify and develop opportunities for promotion.
  • Contribute to the Academy’s newsletter and other publications as required.
  • Undertake other duties as directed, including sharing duties with other staff from time to time.
