We are seeking a Research Fellow to join a multi-disciplinary infectious disease modelling team at the forefront of COVID-19 outbreak modelling in Australia. The role will be based at The University of Melbourne's Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences and the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, and link directly with public health laboratories and epidemiologists in the State Health Department.

This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to research by Australia’s leading University and its partners into the COVID-19 outbreak that continues to guide the public health response.  The role is part of an ARC-funded research project aiming to provide public and animal health, environmental and economic benefits by improving how outbreaks of infectious diseases of international concern are modelled, understood and controlled. The Research Fellow will be responsible for developing dynamic outbreak models integrating epidemiological and genomic data that will provide new insights into the processes driving transmission. The research will be undertaken in partnership with agencies responsible for public and animal health, the findings will inform outbreak response decisions, leading to more effective control.

The Position will be located at the University of Melbourne’s Parkville Campus.  The Campus is part of a Biomedical Research Precent in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia - a vibrant research community consisting of numerous internationally prominent research institutes, hospitals and biomedical companies, including the Doherty Institute and Royal Melbourne Hospital. With exceptional infrastructure, the University promotes world-class collaborative research in the Life Sciences and Biomedicine.

What we are looking for from you

You will hold an advanced degree (PhD or equivalent) in the field on mathematics and statistics, or epidemiology, applied to modelling complex biological systems and have 2-5 years’ experience in phylogenetic/phylodynamic modelling along with the ability to code Bayesian statistical algorithms in a software programming language that interfaces well with R.  As an experienced scientific researcher, you will hold a record of high-quality peer reviewed publications and scientific presentations, demonstrated ability to engage industry audiences and collaborators in the research outputs to ensure the broad uptake and impact of the research. The ability to work with and within a multidisciplinary team, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills will be required along with excellent problem-solving, time allocation and accurate record keeping abilities.

A current working with children’s check is a requirement for this role.
