The National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) is looking for a dynamic individual who enjoys working in a collaborative team environment, to contribute to the Centre’s role in supporting the development of national immunisation practice guidelines and policies.

This position is particularly suitable for a graduate of medical science or medical/health disciplines, with post-graduate qualification in public health and strength in epidemiology, who has keen interest in the development of evidence-informed clinical practice guidelines or health policies, especially in the context of communicable disease control and/or immunisation. Experience in systematic review and appraisal of biomedical literature, meta-analysis, statistical analysis of epidemiological data, health technology assessment, scientific writing for various purposes and audience, and knowledge translation in population health contexts will be assets that you can bring to the position.

NCIRS at Kids Research, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, is the leading body in Australia working in applying research to inform immunisation policy development, best clinical practice, surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases and vaccine safety, and evaluation of immunisation services in Australia. NCIRS has national and international recognition in this arena, and is also developing initiatives to enhance technical skills in these aspects for countries in the Indo-Pacific regions.

What you'll be doing

The National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance of Vaccine Preventable Diseases (NCIRS) is the leading body in Australia working in the area of immunisation research to inform policy and planning for immunisation services in Australia and to support initiatives in the surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases, including disease surveillance, vaccine coverage and immunisation adverse events. This work is funded through agreements with the Australian and the New South Wales governments. NCIRS also conducts epidemiologic and clinical research funded by diverse sources. NCIRS staff includes persons with expertise in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, paediatrics, internal medicine, infectious diseases, epidemiology and quantitative and qualitative research methods. 

The Centre is based within the Division of Research of the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, Westmead Campus, NSW, Australia, but has an all-age research remit and is affiliated with the Discipline of Child and Adolescent Health, Children’s Hospital Westmead Clinical School, the School of Public Health, and the Marie Bashir Institute of the University of Sydney.

Research and surveillance activities include surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases, vaccination coverage and adverse events, vaccine safety and program evaluations and social research. NCIRS also provides technical support for the Australian Government Department of Health on immunisation-related matters, and serves as the technical secretariat for the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI), a key specific responsibility of which is the content of The Australian Immunisation Handbook, which is the set of NHMRC-endorsed national clinical guidelines advising health professionals on the safest and most effective use of vaccines in Australia. 

The successful applicant will be considered for the award of a conjoint academic title in the Faculty of Medicine and Health of The University of Sydney at a level commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience, in either the Discipline of Child & Adolescent Health or the School of Public Health. The academic title will be held for the duration of the NCIRS appointment at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to NCIRS, The Children's Hospital at Westmead for research and clinical matters.
