• Fixed term, full-time (part-time 0.6FTE negotiable) contract until December 2020 with a base salary $86K p.a (pro rata if part-time) plus leave loading and generous contribution to superannuation

About the opportunity 

We are in a period of exciting and significant investment in our Faculty of Medicine and Health and in order to deliver on the University’s ambitious strategic plan, we are looking for an enthusiastic Genetic Counsellor to join the team in our Brain and Mind Centre at Camperdown Campus.

As the Genetic Counsellor, you will be responsible for providing information, counselling and support to research patients and their families with neurogenerative diseases; This will include communication around risks and implications in the genetic research, and whether participants have any concerns or issues that warrant other health professional referrals.

Reporting to Professor Glenda Halliday, NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow, your duties will also include:

• maintaining appropriate records, statistics and documents genetic test results for use by research staff
• high-level professional decision making regarding psychological assessment and treatment for patients and their families
• contributing to the development and implementation of research protocols and policies related to genetic testing for neurodegenerative diseases
• responsible for the development of best practice protocols for test result delivery and management in a research setting.

About you

• tertiary qualifications or equivalent in health sciences, science, nursing or counselling discipline
• post-graduate qualifications in Genetic counselling will be highly regarded
• registered or eligible both Part 1 Certification and Part 2 certification by the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA)
• healthcare delivery and demonstrated experience as a genetic counsellor
• an understanding of patient confidentiality and relevant privacy legislation
• previous experience working within a hospital/research environment and in counselling patients and families on the genetic contribution of specific medical conditions
• good computer skills in MS Office, internet and database management

The successful candidate will have exceptional communication skills, experience in building and maintaining relationships with patients, clinicians, medical educators, healthcare providers and industry partners. They will also have the ability to interact with a diverse group of stakeholders including patients, medical professionals, research bodies and Faculty staff.
