About the opportunity 

We are currently seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to join our Sydney Nursing School.
 
The Research Fellow will provide support to the Clinical Chair of Infection Prevention and Control to lead, facilitate and evaluate the outcomes of high-quality clinical research in infectious diseases and in infection prevention and control between Sydney Nursing School (SNS) at the University of Sydney and the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD).

Your main focus will be to actively lead and contribute to research activities, study management, designing research protocols, data collection and analysis, records management, and undertaking critical aspects of research work including formation of analysis and key findings for publication.

As a qualified Research Fellow, you will also provide work with the Clinical Chair and an established team of researchers and clinicians, the Research Fellow will conduct and collaboratively support clinical research activities within the scope of the WSLHD and SNS strategic directions for infection prevention and control and associated disciplines.

• Tertiary qualifications in nursing, medicine, veterinary science, epidemiology, psychology, public health or other medical and health sciences with Honours in appropriate discipline with relevant experience in related field
• Have, or made substantial progress towards, a higher degree by research qualification such as PhD or have extensive specialist experience in the field of research a cognate area
• Experience in developing and managing research projects including expertise study management, experimental design, grant applications, ethics submissions, data collection and management, data management and analysis, and reporting.
• Demonstrated understanding of the subject-matter within the discipline
• Experience in, or strong interest in working in, a research-intensive academic health setting
• A research publication record including in conducting scientific literary searches and systematic reviews.

The successful candidate will also have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with ability to work both independently and as part of a team. They will be able to demonstrate ability to work under pressure with competing priorities and have excellent problem-solving and judgement skills.

One of the Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery research streams is Infection Control, Infectious Diseases and Immunity, and the Clinical Chair of Infection Prevention and Control takes leadership in this stream. The Research Fellow will support the Clinical Chair of Infection Prevention and Control to lead, facilitate and evaluate the outcomes of high-quality clinical research in infectious diseases and in infection prevention and control between Sydney Nursing School (SNS) at the University of Sydney and the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD). Nurses and midwives working within the WSLHD constitute a large professional workforce with exceptional capacity to improve the quality, productivity and translation of research to meaningful practice outcomes.

Representing just under half of all staff of the LHD, there is unexplored potential for nurses and midwives to contribute directly to the health research agenda of WLHD, Sydney Research, and Sydney Health Partners (a NHMRC Academic Health Research Translation Centre). Key to this alliance is the University of Sydney partnership with Western Sydney Local Health District, the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network and their principal tertiary referral hospitals, eminent medical research institutes, affiliates and centres of excellence. The WSLHD Nursing and Midwifery Service Research Plan aspires to support nurses in the achievement of excellence in patient care outcomes and experience through the development and translation of best practice strong commitment to promoting research capacity and the visibility of nurse-led research, maintaining strong links with university partners in research and higher research degree supervision.

This position fulfils a strategic commitment by all partners to collaborate in research development, attract significant research funding and produce high impact research publications. As health professionals, we are jointly committed to undertaking high quality research that has direct translation potential to improve the health and health care of people within the Westmead Health Precinct, but also research that impacts on national and international policy and practice to improve the health of all people and their communities. This position will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and partners to contribute to high quality education and research relationships, activities and events; and maintain key professional relationships with all partner organisations and government agencies supporting staff and student experience.
