About the opportunity 

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Level A) to undertake high-quality research focused on understanding the genetics of major neurodegenerative diseases such as frontotemporal dementias and Parkinson’s disease.

The Dementia and Movement Disorders Laboratory is located at the Brain and Mind Centre at the University of Sydney and is a large dynamic team undertaking research from bench to bedside across a broad range of neurodegenerative diseases. This is a fantastic opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join our internationally recognised research team and launch their academic career. 

The position is particularly related to the functional characterisation of genetic variants using cellular models and correlation with biomarkers from primary tissues and blood. The research aims related to this opportunity are to identify and understand novel pathogenic pathways identified from our genetic analyses, to develop potential therapeutic strategies to ameliorate them, and biomarkers to diagnosis disease and to monitor efficacy of any intervention.

The position is intended to assist the Research Associate to launch his/her academic career and provide experience that will enhance their career prospects and develop them as potential research leader.

• BSc (Honours) or equivalent and PhD in molecular genetics or closely related discipline
• familiarity with the areas of neurodegenerative diseases and the use of cellular models, standard DNA and biochemical technology
• interest and experience of epigenetic analyses via next-generation sequencing or pyrosequencing would be beneficial
• ability to conduct independent, methodologically rigorous research that contributes to theoretical concepts and has implications for policies and practices
