About the opportunity
The Technical Officer for the NSW Brain Tissue Resource Centre will provide technical and operational support for the research laboratory facilities and ascertainment of cases relevant to the NSW Brain Tissue Resource Centre collection criteria. This includes preparation of human brain tissue for internal and external researchers. Ensures the laboratory facilities meet the needs of the work area and are aligned to the Faculty’s research objectives. Implements measures to minimise excess costs associated with running the laboratory facilities whilst ensuring that facilities provide high quality, professional laboratory services to meet the research needs. Provides sound, expert advice, guidance and technical support to researchers and students using the laboratory facilities, working closely with researchers and key academics and providing collaborative research input for projects being undertaken by the work area. Ensures that the laboratory facilities are well maintained and functioning as required.
The incumbent will be expected to coordinate the activities associated with allocated research projects of the neuropathology laboratory groups. This role will liaise with staff at the Department of Forensic Medicine and the Coroner’s office. Duties are carried out ensuring the relevant Workplace Health and Safety standards are met in the work area and are aligned with the University’s WHS policy.

- Tertiary qualifications likely with Honours in appropriate discipline with relevant experience in related field. May have (or be working towards) completing further studies such as PhD or have extensive specialist experience in the field of research
- extensive Histology experience, including embedding, microtomy, routine and special staining and Immunohistochemistry
- excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day to day operational matters.
- working understanding and current knowledge of relevant aspects of the Work Health and Safety Policy and relevant legislation (including Safe Laboratory Practices for roles based in Laboratory).
The successful candidate will have previous laboratory experience and will be expected to participate in brain donation facilitation. Prepare human brain tissue for neuropathological analysis in accordance with established protocols.
The Discipline of Pathology is one of the research and teaching units within the School of Medical Sciences within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. It is responsible for Pathology teaching in the University of Sydney Medical Program and the Bachelor of Medical Science degree. Aside from teaching, the Discipline also has a number of specialised, externally funded research laboratories and a number of multi-user (shared) facilities. One such specialised laboratory is the neuropathology laboratory which also houses the NSW Brain Tissue Resource Centre (NSW BTRC). The primary aim of the BTRC is to collect and store human brain tissue that has been clinically and pathologically characterised to facilitate a wide range of research into neurological and psychiatric disorders. The NSW BTRC is an integral part of the Discipline of Pathology and has national and international affiliations and recognition as a high-quality research facility.
