Lecturer in General Practice

About the opportunity 

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer within the Department of General Practice at Westmead Clinical School.

In this role you will:

  • deliver teaching and assessment in general practice and clinical medicine within the Sydney MD program.
  • contribute to supervisor development for student placements in general practice
  • undertake research in general practice, under supervision
  • assist with development of the revised Sydney MD program
  • contribute to other departmental academic activities, as needed

About you

  • medical registration in Australia as a specialist in general practice
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practice (FRACGP) or equivalent
  • experience in medical education including teaching and assessment
  • experience in curriculum development and management at university level (desirable)
  • research experience, preferably in general practice or related discipline (desirable)
  • postgraduate qualification in medical education or research (desirable).

About us

Westmead Clinical School is one of the larger schools of Sydney Medical School, with approximately 60 students in each of the four years of the Sydney Medical Program. The unique demography of Western Sydney, with a substantial population of socially disadvantaged people, makes it an ideal place for our students to undertake clinical placements in the community. Teaching is delivered by an enthusiastic band of clinicians including academics, hospital specialists and private practitioners, in both hospital and community settings. The clinical school has a reputation for the very high calibre of its clinical teachers.

The Westmead Precinct has many features which make it an ideal setting for a clinical school. The adult and children’s hospitals offer exposure to all clinical specialties, and nearly every clinical situation imaginable. Westmead boasts a number of clinical units that are regarded as among the best nationally and internationally, and many clinicians who are leaders in their field. And with an increasing number of students from other faculties Westmead is a perfect spot for interprofessional learning.

Westmead is a vibrant research environment with a research hub consisting of The Westmead Institute, Children’s Medical Research Institute and Kids Research Institute, as well as the clinical research environments of the adult and children’s hospitals. There are about 300 higher degree research students and many hundreds of basic scientists and clinician scientists involved in laboratory, translational and clinical research. Westmead Clinical School has over 400 affiliates who have a strong focus on research and teaching.

The Department of General Practice at Westmead was established in 1995 and is led by Professor Tim Usherwood. It delivers teaching at several stages of the Sydney Medical Program, with a focus on community-based teaching. The Department has strong links with Western Sydney PHN and with an extensive network of teaching practices across western Sydney, Nepean and the Blue Mountains. The Department also contributes to teaching at Masters level, to GP registrar training and to continuing professional development for general practitioners. Research within the Department focuses on the prevention and management of chronic disease in general practice, and on access to health care by marginalized groups.
