About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is Australia’s premier University with an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence, and employs over 7600 permanent staff supporting over 60,000 students. The Discipline of Dermatology is a world-class academic program dedicated to the study of diseases of the skin. The purpose of the discipline is to train future leaders in dermatology with a strong focus in teaching, research and clinical excellence.

The Raymond Purves Professor of Dermatology is a leadership position based clinically at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) and is within the Discipline of Dermatology in the Sydney Medical School. The position has been in existence for over 30 years during which successive occupants have been successful in building research activities in the context of a busy clinical department in RPAH.

The position is structured to allow the appointee to make major contributions across all dimensions of dermatology activities (research, clinical care of patients and education) and to interact with major stakeholders and affiliates, particularly the University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health, The Centenary Institute and the Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) at RPAH and its facilities. The position will teach at all relevant levels within the Discipline of Dermatology and within postgraduate educational programs conducted by Sydney Medical School and the SLHD. The position will potentially oversee other staff of the Department of Dermatology at RPAH. Higher degree student supervision is expected to be through the University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health. The position will be expected to play a lead role in effective and inspiring supervision and mentoring of research and clinical fellows and higher degree research students.

There is a currently strong intake of postgraduate research students within the Discipline of Dermatology into projects involving skin biology, inflammatory skin diseases and skin cancer. Dermatology trainees undergoing training in RPAH gain experience in the management of common and rare dermatological conditions and have the opportunity to develop research interests and have participation in clinical trials. The discipline excels in a broad range of laboratory-based and clinical research areas with strong focus in skin immunology, skin cancer and other important and sometimes life-threatening skin conditions.

For candidates with strong basic and/or translational research background, appropriate state-of-the-art laboratory space may be offered in collaboration with the Centenary Institute, an independent Medical Research Institute located at the heart of the University’s Camperdown Campus and RPAH.
