About the opportunity 

Sydney College of the Arts (SCA) is based in the School of Literature, Art and Media, one of the six schools of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The School of Literature, Art and Media is a vibrant school whose pedagogic practice, research profile and external engagements are shaped by lively synergies between traditional disciplines such as Art History, English and Linguistics and newer formations such as Media and Communication, Film and Museum Studies.

Over its twenty-five-year history in the University, SCA has gained an enviable reputation as a leading centre for education and research in the visual arts. Its list of distinguished alumni includes some of Australia’s leading visual artists. SCA is one important part of the University’s commitment to the visual and performing arts – which includes the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, Power Institute of Fine Arts, Department of Art History, and our extensive Museums and Galleries portfolio, soon to be significantly enhanced by the opening of the new Chau Chak Wing Museum on the Camperdown campus.

SCA has consistently positioned itself at the forefront of concept based contemporary art teaching and practice, driven by the principle that students and research candidates conceptually and critically engage with visual art practice. The University has recently reimagined the SCA to be comprised of broad conceptual thinkers who can offer expertise in a variety of media and can teach in conjunction with expert technical staff who represent a flexible studio model.

As an academic with an understanding of contemporary visual art (reporting to the Chair of Department and Director, SCA) you will contribute to academic teaching, research and administration within SCA. This includes the delivery of studio-based and visual art education and making a strong contribution to the research strengths of the School of Literature, Art and Media.

We are seeking applicants who are technically skilled in moving image production and who have a strong philosophical and theoretical understanding of the field. Applicants will bring a multi-disciplinary approach to the design and delivery of new curriculum, high quality screen arts and contemporary art research and have the desire to build and develop engagement with external stakeholders.

We are seeking an energetic and committed individual for this Lecturer in Screen Arts role who possesses demonstrated expertise in the following areas:

• Knowledge of historical and contemporary visual art orientated screen arts practice and artists
• Excellent skills in teamwork and collaboration
• Expertise in screen arts with a focus on film and video production
• A Master of visual arts/fine art/screen arts or equivalent qualification
• Recent screen arts teaching experience at tertiary level with the capacity to teach across a broad range of subjects within the fields of screen arts
• Active in visual arts/fine art/screen arts research and practice with specific expertise in screen arts
• A demonstrated research track record, including exhibitions, books, moving image or recorded works, journal articles, or book chapters in the areas of screen arts, video art, film or digital media
