About the opportunity 

The Master of Genetic Counselling is a 96 CP 2 year full time program of the Sydney Medical School - Northern, which is a Clinical Teaching unit of the Sydney Medical School based at the Kolling Institute of Medical Research, Royal North Shore Hospital. The 20 students per annum attend coursework lectures and seminars in the Kolling, conduct research projects either within the Kolling or with supervisors located either in major teaching hospitals in NSW or internationally and participate in supervised clinical placements in genetics services  at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital Westmead, Royal North Shore Hospital Genetics Service Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Liverpool Hospital, Nepean Hospital, Hunter Genetics Prince of Wales Hospital Hereditary Cancer Clinic, Westmead Familial Cancer Service, Wollongong Family Cancer Service, ACT Genetics service, Tamworth Outreach Genetics service ,Taree/Forster Outreach Clinical Genetics Services as well as interstate and internationally.

The Education Support Officer is responsible for the administrative coordination of the students in regard to the coursework, research projects and relevant ethics and requirements and applications and clinical placements, as well as assistance with research staff HR queries. The coursework clinical and community practice and research components support the overarching values of the University of Sydney – Scholarship, Lifelong Learning and Global Citizenship – and the 5 clusters of abilities; Research and Inquiry, Information Literacy, Personal and Intellectual Autonomy, Ethical, Social and Professional Understanding;  Communication.

The successful candidate will provide high level administrative services to post graduate students undertaking the Master of Genetic Counselling course and support the course director and lecturer position. The position is responsible for overall course administration and liaison with students and core faculty (over 80 visiting lecturers and supervisors who are members of the Discipline of Genetic Medicine of the Sydney Medical School or are invited guest lecturers).

  • completed tertiary qualification and/or relevant experience and/or experience in administration at  a tertiary education facility at postgraduate level
  • well-developed interpersonal and written communication skills in an understanding professional manner
  • demonstrated ability to liaise effectively and positively with a broad range of people at all levels demonstrated ability to work independently, flexibly, adaptively and constructively while also being part of a team
  • strong organisational and administrative skills with a demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and solve problems
  • excellent time management skills including the ability to take initiative, plan workload and meet deadlines
  • excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
  • high level of computer literacy (including word processing, databases, spreadsheets and presentations (Microsoft word, access, excel, PowerPoint) preferably including student administration systems and website design or the capacity to acquire these within a minimal timeframe
  • knowledge of University rules, policies and procedures or the capacity to acquire these within a minimal timeframe
  • experience in a healthcare environment.
