About the opportunity 

The Prevention Research Collaboration (PRC) is a research group within the School of Public Health, at the University of Sydney and has specialised expertise in population-wide prevention research and translational research. In particular, PRC is engaged in generating and disseminating new knowledge about implementation of population-wide prevention. The PRC research portfolio includes public health priority topics, with major emphases on chronic disease prevention and health promotion, especially tobacco control, physical activity, public health nutrition, and obesity prevention.

The PRC seeks to achieve excellence in relation to its research focus areas:

  • public health research on chronic disease prevention, including physical activity, tobacco, nutrition and obesity
  • applied public health research, specifically research translation, population-wide and dissemination research
  • policy-relevant and technical research for government and international bodies\
  • methodological research and measurement research development to inform prevention and program evaluation.

The Biostatistician, with skills in quantitative methods and analysis will be responsible for undertaking relevant statistical work in the area of quantitative public health research both within the Prevention Research Collaboration (PRC) more specifically in support of the NSW Health Prevention Research Support Program (PRSP).

About you

  • relevant tertiary qualifications in statistics or biostatistics
  • experience in health-related statistical analysis, including the use of routine survey and population health data
  • experience in multivariate modelling relevant to public health and experience in calculating complex sample sizes and weighting in population health studies
  • demonstrated skills in applying advanced statistical analysis methods
  • effective communication skills to liaise and communicate with stakeholders internal and external to PRC
  • demonstrated skills in analysing population health data and intervention data
  • solid written and oral communication skills including ability to understand strategic

communication issues and formulate appropriate methods for communicating policy relevant technical information for different audiences.

The PRC is responsible for the delivery of the Prevention Research Support Program (PRSP) funded by the NSW Ministry of Health, in addition to its existing prevention-oriented research, evaluation and teaching program. This PRSP Program requires support from staff with strong quantitative research and evaluation methods experience that allows for scientific rigour within the real world setting. The Biostatistician will work with a range of researchers on epidemiological, prevention and translational-oriented research relevant to the work of the broader PRC group. The research includes analyses of data from population health datasets, epidemiological studies, and intervention studies.
