About the opportunity 

Reporting to the Senior Technical Officer, you will provide essential technical support and assistance to coursework students, researchers and others working in the laboratory. The assistance you will provide varies from preparing equipment and teaching materials for coursework teaching, to setting up practicals and tutorials, maintaining lecture demonstration storage and so on. You will also maintain the laboratory workplace ensuring that the research, learning and teaching requirements of the work area are met effectively. This includes monitoring technical equipment; reporting issues or faults; testing and repairing the equipment; and cleaning up safely after classes are complete. As part of the technical operations team you are also responsible to ensure that the laboratory is compliant with the University’s WHS policy and requirements.

To be considered, you will possess:

  • relevant training and certification or, has equivalent experience and training to work in a laboratory, with a willingness to undertake further studies to better develop skills in laboratory techniques/methods
  • good verbal and written communication skills, with proven ability to apply theoretical knowledge and techniques to meet the key accountabilities
  • ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work
  • intermediate computer skills
  • demonstrated ability to organise and prioritise work, sometimes under pressure, with competing priorities and sometimes limited supervision
  • maintain a sound working knowledge and awareness of safety regulations and operating procedures within the laboratory environment.
