Applications are invited for appointment to a continuing position at either lectureship or senior lectureship level (levels B or C) in the School of Civil Engineering, within the Faculty of Engineering & Information Technologies at the University of Sydney.
The School of Civil Engineering has a reputation for the quality of its graduates, for the breadth, depth and innovation in its undergraduate curriculum, and for the strength of its research and postgraduate teaching programs. The School’s research and teaching are primarily in the fields of structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, fluids and environmental engineering, and project management. This new opening highlights the School’s vision to further grow the activities of the Sydney Centre in Geomechanics and Mining Materials (SciGEM) directed by Professor Itai Einav. The school and SciGEM are strengthening their research capabilities and we are particularly interested to grow our research in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering and/or rock mechanics.

You will hold a PhD in Civil Engineering or related discipline. You should be able to demonstrate vibrant research in rock and/or soil mechanics, and/or in geoenvironmental engineering, involving proven combination of experimental and theoretical achievements. Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate substantial experience of experimental mechanics. Proven experience in the planning and execution of fundamental research and demonstrated ability to publish research outcomes in high-quality international journals are essential criteria. Since the position will require liaising with industry, you will be able to demonstrate strong communication skills.
As lecturer or senior lecturer, you will teach in any civil engineering unit of study in either the undergraduate or postgraduate programs, such as rock mechanics and geomechanics. You will also supervise student research projects; establish strong research programs; apply for external research funding; assist with course development and administration; contribute to professional and community service; and contribute to academic scholarship.
