About the opportunity 

The Faculty of Health Sciences is the largest health science faculty in Australia and is internationally recognized for quality and innovation in teaching and research. Disability and community research is one of the substantive research strengths within the faculty.

The National Health and Medical Research Council Centre for Research Excellence in Disability and Health (CRE-DH) http://credh.org.au/. This is the first research centre of its kind internationally, the CRE-DH will gather the evidence needed to guide social and health policy reform with the explicit intent of improving the health of working-age Australians with disabilities. The CRE-DH involves researchers from across Australia and internationally with expertise in public health, social epidemiology, health economics, health and social policy, psychology, psychiatry and public administration. At the University of Sydney, the CRE-DH is led by Professor Gwynnyth Llewellyn. Professor Anne Kavanagh from the University of Melbourne is lead CI on the CRE-DH.

We are seeking a dedicated post-doctoral Research Fellow to join our multidisciplinary team to analyse national administrative and survey data related to mapping social, economic and health inequities for people with disabilities. You will work closely with the Australian Bureau of Statistics in accessing relevant data sets. You will also contribute to the development of a monitoring framework to track progress in reducing health inequities associated with disability over time. There will also be opportunities to contribute to other work programs within the CRE-DH.

You will be supervised by Professor Gwynnyth Llewellyn working closely with Professor Eric Emerson and Professor Roger Stancliffe at the Centre for Disability Research and Policy at the University of Sydney http://sydney.edu.au/health-sciences/cdrp/. Being part of this team will provide you with unique training and mentorship opportunities to become a leading quantitative researcher in the field of health inequity. You will work as part of a large multidisciplinary research team. If applying as an early post-doctoral level (1-2 years post doctorate award) you would be encouraged to apply for an NHMRC or ARC post-doctoral fellowship. Over the course of the fellowship will develop your own program of research on disability and health with mentorship from senior researchers. You will apply for external funding to support your research. At the end of your contract you will be well placed to lead your own research program in the important, and emerging field, of disability and health.  People with a lived experience of disability are encouraged to apply. About you

  • a PhD in social epidemiology, statistics of other relevant social science area as noted in description above (essential)
  • an emerging profile in public health research as it relates to disadvantaged groups (essential)
  • demonstrated expertise in analysis of large complex data sets (e.g., administrative data, national surveys) including linked data sets (essential)
  • knowledge of social service data sets (essential)
  • knowledge of national survey and administrative data on disability (desirable)
  • a track record in international peer-reviewed scientific publications and other research outputs (essential)
  • a track record in multi-strategy dissemination of research findings (desirable)
  • demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team across a range of backgrounds, to achieve project goals and meet agreed deadlines (essential)
  • a commitment to developing a track record in disability related research (essential)
  • capacity to supervise post-graduate students and junior research staff (essential)
  • track record in disability research and understanding of the daily lives of people with disabilities (desirable)
  • strong collaborations in the disability sector (desirable)
  • track record of higher degree research student supervision or co-supervision (desirable)
